ACTIVITY 8

Encouraging the baby to place her fingers in the individual sections of a divided pillbox

GOAL

The baby will probe spaces with her fingers.

MATERIALS

One seven-section pillbox with the top open

IN THE CHILD'S ENVIRONMENT

This activity can be done in or outside of the home anytime the baby is alert.

PROCEDURE

Seat the baby in an upright position with a tray in front of her.

Place a seven-section pillbox on the child's tray with the top removed.

Say to the baby, “Can you put your finger in each opening?”

If the baby is unable to do this, model the activity by placing your index finger in each indent, going from left to right.

If the baby is still unable to do this activity, use hand-under-hand instruction.

Repeat the activity two to three times until the child can do it independently.
